- How to make Canine Ears and Tail for a costume?
I'm wondering how somebody would make a pair of ears and a big fluffy tail for a wolf/dog costume. I don't want to buy an ear and tail set at some costume place because the tail is usually way too skinny or it's for a cat. I also want the tail to bend or something (maybe done with some wire), not just a hanging piece of fabric. How could a make an ear and tail set with big fluffy fabrics?
A Find some of that flexible mold stuff that's kind of link clay, but it feels more like moldable styrofoam. IDK what it's called - not FIMO. Play with it until you've molded out the perfect dog ears. A little larger than normal - say 6" long/tall. Mold them around a simple hard plastic headband that can hide under your hair. Now use small scraps of fur and glue onto your ears. Use a colored fur for the "back" and lighter or white for the "front". Hold your hand up with the fingers together and cup it just a bit. That's what your ears will look like. Remember right and left ears will be different. Hold them to your head before deciding where to mold to the headband. Probably higher up / closer together than you would first think. For the tail, sketch out a long elongated tear-drop shape. Maybe 3 feet long. This will be sewn longways - making a long straight side and an arched side. Try it with just your paper pattern first, to make sure it's big enough and long enough. Use two wire hangers to make it bend. Make each one half the length, and bend a small circle in the ends and link them together. Now they sway back and forth independent from each other, but stay together. Loosely stitch your wires onto the long side of the tail so it will swing when the wires swing. Stuff loosely or however you want. Use a large safety pin to pin it to your pants or waistband and cover the pin with your shirt.
